Thomas Flashman, uncle of the infamous Harry Flashman, has adventures too, and they involve famous events and personages just like his wastrel nephew. One advantage Uncle Thomas has is that his adventures come during a perhaps even more exciting period, starting in about 1800 and covering the Napoleonic Wars and many of the other settings for Regency and Sharpe novel lovers.Thomas is asked by a spymaster to take forged letters to Spain to trick the Spanish into leaving the haven of Cadiz harbor so the Royal Navy can destroy the fleet. He takes ship with the astonishing Thomas Cochrane, the British Seawolf and one of the most satisfying swashbucklers in Real History. If you think his exploits,all of them true, sound familiar it's because both Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey are psychic twins of his. you may also recall Cochrane from Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe's Devil.
Like those novels, Flashman and the Seawolf is very well written, entertaining, and full of fascinating historical detail. If you like Age of Sail books or Napoleonic era stories, you have it in spades here.
The only caveat is that if you expect Uncle Thomas to be anything like nephew Harry Flashman, you will be disappointed. I was frankly puzzled by the author's decision to make his protagonist a Flashman. If the purpose was to get me to buy the book it worked. But a George MacDonald Fraser fan will pay for the mistake. Fraser's humorous and irrevverent stroeies are the point of the semi-original Flashman's appeal.. and though a terrific sea yarn, this book ain't it. I once saw a movie that was a translation from Finnish that had been tagged as a Sinbad the Sailor movie... though it was not in the least. I found myself, like Gypsy on MST3K, protesting throughout the book "But he's NOT Flashman!"
Read it anyway. It's fun. It will make you want to read more about Cochrane, and I fully intend to read Brightwell's further "Flashman" adventures.

Mr. Brightwell took a huge and unnecessary risk in attempting his homage to the classic Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser. His Thomas Flashman, in "Flashman and the Sea Wolf", is our Harry's uncle and, Mr. Brightwell takes pains to inform us, has the Flashman yellow streak and a wandering eye for the ladies. In practice, however, he possesses considerable courage and in his most memorable affair (with the bath house girl, Jasmine), he admits to have loved her. Thomas is not yet twenty as this story begins, and his callow streak is at least as much due to his youth as to any Flashman genetic material. Thomas even makes several observations on poverty and wasteful fashions that reveal a sober side that Harry never exhibited. Of course, for some, the real test of Flash-iness -- and one that Thomas fails -- might be a sense of complete self-centeredness, the need to pursue his own appetites at whatever cost to others around him, and the snarky desire to comment on everything with a blithe disregard for propriety. The latter, especially, is where much of the humor comes from in the Flashman books, and here it should probably be noted that whatever Mr. Brightwell may have intended, "Sea Wolf" is more serious than witty.
The very good news, however, is that Thomas does share with Harry Flashman one very important trait, the knack for falling in with dangerous people and into dangerous situations; and Mr. Brightwell does a fine job of researching his history and sprinkling his facts into the yarn, albeit not with the famous footnotes of GMF. It would appear that Thomas is destined for a career as a "political" rather than in the military, but from this first adventure that obviously will not keep him from getting involved in some pretty intense battles.
The Sea Wolf of the title is Thomas Cochrane, an extraordinary individual and an excellent choice around whom to build this first episode. He was a sea captain during the Napoleanic era, so there is inevitably some similarity to the plethora of naval tales that are out there. This Flashman will presumably fall into adventures on land, as well.
Mr. Brightwell probably attracted many readers with the Flashman hook but in truth, if this volume is any indication, his new series is not much aided by its somewhat spurious attachment to Harry Flashman. It certainly stands on its own quite capably and deserves to be read.
Robert Brightwell's novel, "Flashman and the Sea Wolf", is a delight. As a novel about the sea and the ships that sailed and fought for England, it is well written, full of swash-buckling excitement and substantial historical accuracy. Of course Flashman's role added fun to the story. The novel really centers on the exploits of Thomas Cochrane, possibly England's finest fighting sea captain. I have done much reading about the life and times of Cochrane, as well as about the conditions existing in England's navy, and can attest to the accuracy of the presentation in the novel. Sadly, British naval history was fraught with power struggles, political intrigues and gross unfairness, which frustrated and embittered Cochrane and others and resulted in Cochrane's tragic circumstances. While I do not recommend historical novels as an accurate source of learning about British naval history, nevertheless Brightwell's novel is a wonderful read. Enjoy!
