Barn Again A Memoir is a historical fantasy novel set in a parallel section of the multiverse in which readers still read, agents still rep, and publishers still publish literary novels.

If you are sick of zombies and MFAs, this book might be for you.

Swear words, prairie dogs, latrinalia and a low speed bicycle chase. What's not to love? I was pleasantly surprised by this read. I rarely laugh out loud while reading, but found myself actually laughing multiple times. The humor of this book just appeals to me. The story is engaging and interesting and writing a novel from the point of view of an author required by his agent to write a memoir was a great choice. The memoir is basically a big 'middle finger' to the literary agent of the protagonist (is he a protagonist?).

Sarcastic humor, ridiculous situations and a flurry for curse words? Sign me up. Give it a chance, you'll enjoy it if you don't take it too seriously.

Barn Again A Memoir edition by Alan Good Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was hooked when I read the part about the literary agent sending most of writer Jonathan Barnard Jr.'s short stories back to him in a box of ashes. Alan Good has wrapped some great insights into the pain of trying to write "not crap" in a frequently hilarious tale of a bad divorce, warring in-laws, and police problems. Warning Alan uses big words, and more curse words than I have ever said in my life. The prairie dog flipping you off on the cover should have been a clue. Five stars for a funny, intelligent, well-written book.
In a perfect world, self-publishing would be punk as f***, a giant, artistically vibrant middle finger aimed at the publishing industry, where, to quote from Barn Again, it's "almost impossible for anyone who didn't study under Joyce Carol Oates to get published." This world, though, is far from perfect. Most self-published novels are nigh unreadable, and the self-pub market is full of insufferable marketing majors who idolize James Patterson for selling millions of books and write as if they've never actually read a novel.

Barn Again A Memoir is something entirely different a self-published novel that's actually good. Really f***ing good. And funny.

Barn Again aims its blistering satirical sights on the publishing industry, and it scores on nearly every shot, lampooning the publishing industry through the fake-memoir exploits of its protagonist, Jonathan Barnard Jr., a writer of some renown and an all-around screwup. Along the way, it manages to satirize pretty much everything it touches, from memoir to politics to the adjunct-fueled university system. It also contains the best scene involving someone defecating on the windshield of a car ever committed to print, and if that's not enough for you, I just don't know.
Alan Good's BARN AGAIN A Memoir, is one of the strangest but most unique play on emotions that I have had the pleasure to read. Good's literary background allows him to leave the tracks in an intriguing string of four-letter words that always seem to end up at the station. I happened to shop and place my own novel on a shelf that features BARN AGAIN, started to read the book and couldn't put it down.

This "Memoir" leaves me knowing that we all think in, but never have the guts to put in print, the ideas, emotions and rhetoric that rev this book up to 3600rpm. Alan Good has surpassed all of that wild stuff that I read as, black market lit, in high school. I am tempted to headline my review with the Chapter Nine title, but that would give the context away. Buy, and read BARN AGAIN A Memoir. Try it - You'll like it.
I had to read The Old Man and the Sea my freshman year of high school, which may have been the first time I resented a book for wasting the finite hours of my life. Two years later, when TAing for that same teacher, I asked him, candidly, Why...? What, ostensibly, makes this book a must-read for clever 14 year olds?

He smirked and told me it was like fishing you sit there and you wait for something to happen. That guy was a total smartass, so to this day, I don't know if he was pulling my leg, but I respected the answer.

Barn Again was like going on a hike. The trailheads are poorly marked; the paths are winding and littered with countless things I don't know about, don't care about, don't like, don't even understand, and countless other things I don't even notice, I'm sure. For long stretches, I plod along in a meditative, almost liminal state, neither bored nor entertained, just trusting that it'll take me back to the parking lot eventually. Along the way there are insights into systems natural and unnatural, all of them beautiful, humbling, indifferent, and moments of truth affirming my most deeply held beliefs.

Chapter Eleven alone makes the whole journey worth it.
I actually bought the hard copy of this but can't seem to find it on here now. Either way, this is a very entertaining book. Filled with relatable, intelligent commentary and lots of smart-assery. You should buy this book, if not for the story then at least for the fantastic image of a prairie dog flipping the bird.
